Plantjes en Bloemen IV

Sunday, March 25th, 2007

The saga continues. Garden season was officially declared open today.

Hey, squirrels! This is not your buffet. Get lost!

Shall outsmart them this time around.

Anyway, trying to breathe some life into dried weeds while cleaning up the remains of last year (mainly, dried weeds). Can’t wait for the first barbecue.

Freudenshow — Trash comedy TV from Germany for people with attention deficit disorder

Friday, November 10th, 2006

So I finally got around to watching the first three episodes of Die Freudenshow. Comes with a flavor of subversiveness that I like. Might be on to something. Check it out!

It’s about time I learned some programming. I decided to go with Ruby, I’ve found a great tutor, and I’m on page 7 of my 800 page book. Look, it works:

irb(main):004:0> def sum(n1, n2)
irb(main):005:1> n1 + n2
irb(main):006:1> end
=> nil
irb(main):007:0> sum (3, 4)
(irb):7: warning: don't put space before argument parentheses
=> 7
irb(main):008:0> sum(3, 4)
=> 7
irb(main):009:0> sum("cat", "dog")
=> "catdog"

This is fun.

Summer reading

Sunday, July 23rd, 2006

  • A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction (Center for Environmental Structure Series) — Christopher Alexander
  • The Deliberative Democracy Handbook: Strategies for Effective Civic Engagement in the Twenty-First Century — John Gastil
  • Cultivating Communities of Practice — Etienne Wenger
  • Visualizing Argumentation: Software Tools for Collaborative and Educational Sense-Making (Computer Supported Cooperative Work) — Paul Arthur Kirschner
  • The World Cafe: Shaping Our Futures Through Conversations That Matter — Juanita Brown
  • Hollywood Haven: Homes and Haunts of the European Emigres and Exiles in Los Angeles (Studies in Austrian Literature, Culture, and Thought Translation Series) — Cornelius Schnauber

Delightful pictures of the Citroën DS on Flickr.

Too bad Netflix doesn’t deliver any meaningful results for the same search yet, because movies with this particular car in them are likely to be good (think Ventura, Gabin, Delon, Trintignant, Piccoli, Montand, Belmondo etc.).

Plantjes en Bloemen II

Saturday, March 18th, 2006

It saddens me to report that one zucchini seedling did not quite make it and had to be replaced. And both the basil and the chives are still struggling to get comfortable. On the plus side, the rest of the plants is doing well. Today, bell peppers, cherry tomatos and strawberries were added.

Plantjes en Bloemen

Saturday, March 4th, 2006

Quite a momentous day today, as I kicked off gardening season 2006. Tomatos, peppers, zucchini, a selection of herbs, and a lime tree will take on the concrete backyard. I expect to become self-sufficient by June.
